A.I Maya - Skyfire by Jael-X A.I Maya - Skyfire by Jael-X
As the name implies, this planet scene was created within Autodesk Maya......mostly.

The core piece, which is the planet, was created completely within Maya, using maps sourced from online sources such as NASA. Being my first planet, I chose an Earth map for the terrain because yes.

As this scene was not animated, I had no need to composite with Nuke X, rather I used Photoshop to bring everything together. The background and every other element was added within Photoshop and everything was tweaked within.

The planet consists of the surface, clouds, and atmosphere, all which comprised 6 spheres with different shaders applied to them. Each sphere was exported separately from the rest and then brought together in Photoshop. Rather than exporting a single rendered image through Maya, exporting the layers separately allows one to tweak them to their own liking in a program like Photoshop or Nuke to achieve the result he/she wants.

Compared to the usual method of 2D/Photoshop-alone, this method of producing planets demolishes it in several key areas:

-More realistic results. Can't really argue with something that's produced by physics.
-Creative freedom. There's only so much you can do with painting/photo manipulation alone. In a 3D program, you can add myriads of textures, elements, lights, anything.

The only thing it loses on is difficulty. I had to rely on special nodes to get the dark/light elements of the planet working. It can get incredibly complex and time consuming.

Arguably, this served as a test. And it would seem that it has succeeded. For the foreseeable future, I'll be relying on Maya for my creations.
